Rhinoplasty is becoming a very popular procedure among the younger generation and teenagers in today’s westernized society. People turn to rhinoplasty specialists for a wide range of reasons. Many want nose surgery due to peer pressure or bullying and have low self esteem. They hope that by changing their appearance they will overcome this. Others do it in order to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose, they may be unhappy with the shape, it may need straightening, or they are unhappy with the tip of the nose and want it to be more prominent. Other reasons include a large dorsal hump which requires filing down or the nose is too wide and needs narrowing, everyone has their own individual reasons.

There are rhinoplasty specialists throughout the world. Many of which are located in America. Almost all rhinoplasty specialists are certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, ABFPRS for short. These certified surgeons are fully qualified specialists in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

To become a specialist in rhinoplasty the doctor would have gone to medical school and completed training in facial plastic surgery. He or she would have achieved certification from ABFPRS and/or The American Board of Plastic Surgery or the American Board of Otolaryngology. They would have also completed a two day written and oral examination on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Their work would have been reviewed in order to be certified. Once they have been certified ABFPRS they will have to follow a code of ethical conduct.

There are two techniques of rhinoplasty that can be used. The first being closed rhinoplasty. When this technique is used, all incisions are within the nose and are hidden. This type of procedure is limited and is therefore better for more straight forward operations. Closed rhinoplasty means that there is much less swelling or bruising because the nose goes through fewer traumas.

The second technique that your specialist may suggest is open rhinoplasty. Many rhinoplasty specialists prefer to use this method as they can carry out more detailed work. In this procedure the skin is lifted away from the nasal structure and is stitched back once the procedure is complete. This method takes longer to recover from and creates more bruising and swelling. It may leave minor scaring but your specialist will be able to minimize this.

Skilled rhinoplasty specialists will ensure that no patient’s nose looks the same. Each patient's nose should suit his or her own face. A rhinoplasty specialist will ensure that the operated nose appears natural and not look as though it has been operated on.
